From Humble Beginnings to Industry Leader

In 1973, Ken Thamert embarked on a transformative journey by founding Wrought Iron Handicrafts after acquiring three small metalworking tools from Hull, England. What started as a simple exploration into metalworking quickly evolved into a passion that would shape an entire industry. Popular Mechanics magazine's rave review of these tools fueled Ken's ambition, leading him to establish a business dedicated to sharing his newfound love for metalcraft. Within hours of using these tools, Ken realized their extraordinary potential and was determined to make them available to others who shared his enthusiasm for metalworking.

Ken’s commitment to quality and innovation fueled the growth of Wrought Iron Handicrafts. The initial success in crafting and selling metal creations laid the foundation for securing exclusive distributor rights for Metalcraft Tools in the USA and Canada. Ken’s decision to leave his job in downtown Rochester and focus entirely on Wrought Iron Handicrafts marked the beginning of a new era in metalworking, characterized by a dedication to excellence and customer satisfaction.

Expanding Horizons: Kosy Creations and New Opportunities

The journey continued in 1988 when Ken acquired Kosy Creations, a well-respected California company specializing in miniature metal scrolls and oxyacetylene welding. This acquisition allowed Wrought Iron Handicrafts to diversify its product offerings and cater to a broader audience. While Kosy Creations had a different focus compared to the Metalcraft Range of Tools, it enriched the product line and broadened the company's reach, further solidifying its position in the metalworking industry.

By 1999, the company celebrated a significant milestone with the completion of a new facility in Rochester, Minnesota. This state-of-the-art facility marked a new chapter in Wrought Iron Handicrafts' history, providing a solid foundation for continued growth and innovation. The company’s dedication to excellence was further demonstrated through participation in numerous trade shows across America, showcasing the Metalcraft Range of tools and connecting with thousands of enthusiasts and professionals.

Celebrating 50 Years of Metalworking Excellence

As Wrought Iron Handicrafts celebrates 50 years in business, the vision that Ken Thamert had of sharing the joy of metalworking continues to thrive. Today, the legacy of Metalcraft Tools lives on through the Practical Range, the Master Range, and the Professional XL5+ Range, each designed to cater to various metalworking needs and skill levels. With Scott Thamert, Ken's son, now at the helm as President, the company remains committed to delivering quality products backed by exceptional service. Ken, at 90, still plays a vital role as CFO, embodying the dedication and passion that have driven the company’s success.

Our philosophy is simple yet profound: Offer top-quality products supported by unparalleled customer service. As we reflect on our history and look forward to the future, Wrought Iron Handicrafts remains dedicated to fulfilling Ken's original vision—ensuring that the art of metalworking continues to inspire and engage metal enthusiasts and woodworkers around the world.
